MPAA trying to close the "Analog Hole"

BoingBoing has an interesting article on the latest shenanigans by the MPAA on how they are trying to gain control of the "analog hole" and what manufacturers can build into systems in regards to digitizing video.  How can we be so stupid as to allow any industry to dictate the usage of a technology they do not own.

The MPAA doesn't own digitized video technology, they choose to use set standards to provide their product so that we as the public can consume them in the widest market possible.  If the MPAA wants to control a technology, then they should invent a technology and patent it.  That way they can control it and require any manufacturer that wishes to use their technology to comply with any license requirements.  Leave it up to the consumer on whether they wish to buy into the MPAA's technology.   The MPAA will make far less money I'm sure, but they will be secure in the knowledge that nobody is stealing their I.P.  If they choose to still publish to set Technology standards, then they have to abide by the framework of that standard.
