Blogger discovers use of doctored photograph on Reuters
The Washington Post ran an article about a blogger discovering the use of a doctored photograph on Reuters of an Israeli attack on Beirut. Awhile back I wrote a blog entry regarding digital forensics so I performed a search to see what's new in the field. I ran across an interesting site at Columbia.edu for TrustFoto which has an online demo where you can submit a URL of an image or upload your own to test. I tried two photos, one from Google images of Yosemite, which returned a 75% confidence factor, and one of myself where I had created a featured border which returned 30% confidence factor.
I'd really like to see a FireFox plugin that will test images as they are displayed, indicating the trustworthiness of an image where you set a threshold level to alert you when an image has been highly altered, perhaps even highlighting the suspect regions, but then again, maybe I don't want my illusions shattered the next time I view a photo of a super model and see a big red border around her ankles and waist.
Sony Alpha 100 DSLR
I think I've decided on what my next new camera purchase will be. It's the Sony Alpha 100 DSLR. The first camera to come out of Sony after they acquired the DSLR division from Konica/Minolta. The selling point for me is that I can use my existing Minolta AF mount lenses. The expected street price of around $1000 with an 18-70mm lens is attractive as well.
